Health Care Assistant working with children with life limiting conditions. Here I developed my foundations in the art of nursing, attention to detail and person-centred, holistic care. Working in an emotionally charged environment helped me build my passion and resilience. it showed me the value of quality, dignity, attentive care and the significance of ‘getting it right’ building trusting and supportive working relationships.

The League for People with Disabilities

Cabin Leader

The League for People with Disabilities, Maryland, USA

Jun 2011 - Sept 2011 | Dec 2011 | Jun 2012 - Sept 2012 ( 9mos )

I spent 9 months across summer 2011 and 2012 working in America at accessible summer camps that were adapted so that young adults with intellectual, neurological and physical disabilities where able to fulfil the traditional experience of going to summer camp. This was a life changing experience where I learned the richness of uniqueness, diversity and inclusion and that everyone should be treated equal no matter what their differences. It taught me the importance of individuality and I feel it really defined me as a person – what and where I want to be in life.

Senior Practitioner, Assistant Team Leader and Support Worker

National Autistic Society

Sep 2004 - Dec 2012 ( 8yrs 4mos )

I began my employment, aged eighteen, in a medium secure 24-hour residential school working with children and young adults on the autistic spectrum with associated conditions, complex challenging behaviour and others with physical needs. These seven years became my foundations for learning disability knowledge. Using this knowledge, influencing skills and role modelling I educated, guided and supported the young people to develop their own independence and reduce the impact of any impairment that could limit their social inclusion. I helped them develop to overcome personal barriers, developing long term interventions and strategies to overcome their differences.
